Rizwana urges unity for a democratic, inclusive Bangladesh
Environment Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan today (24 January) called for rising above narrow-mindedness to foster a democratic, inclusive and unbiased Bangladesh.
"We envision a Bangladesh where democracy, rights, and equality thrive," she said, urging the nation to unite and make decisions based on collective welfare, beyond organisational, individual, or partisan interests, reads a press release.
The advisor made these remarks at the inauguration of a special exhibition on the July uprising, organised by Prothom Alo at the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy in the capital.
Highlighting the movement, she remarked, "This uprising demonstrates that the fall of oppressive autocracy is inevitable and always disgraceful. The events of July-August stand as a testament to the unmatched courage of our student community. The students led this movement, and we stood by them, offering support. We have stood by them for a long time and will continue to do so."
Expressing deep sorrow, she added, "When we see the list of those killed and injured, it is heartbreaking to know that many students have lost their vision forever. Students who once dreamt of becoming cricketers or footballers are now left in darkness. No effort on our part can restore their sight."
She further stated, "Our determination should be to build a democratic, inclusive, and safe Bangladesh where future generations can realise their dreams. Honoring those who sacrificed their lives is the true way to pay tribute to their memory."
Rizwana noted that this event would preserve the evidence of the movement and ensure that its context and events are not distorted in the future. She concluded by saying, "Today's programme reminds us that our struggle for a better future should be guided by the glory of sacrifice."
Sharmin S Murshed, advisor for Social Welfare, said, "The student community has been wronged repeatedly in the past. We failed to realise their dreams. Now, we have an opportunity to build the Bangladesh they envisioned, and this can only be achieved collectively."
Other speakers at the event included British High Commissioner to Bangladesh Sarah Cooke and Prothom Alo's Executive Editor Sajjad Sharif.
Following the inauguration, the guests, along with Prothom Alo Editor Matiur Rahman, toured the exhibition, which will remain open until 31 January. The exhibition can be visited daily from 12:00pm to 8:00pm, and on Fridays from 3:00pm to 8:00pm.
