Junior Tigresses leave U19 World Cup with heads high after big win over Windies
The 10 wicket victory, while emphatic, could not secure a semi-final spot for Bangladesh, as their earlier defeat to India had dashed their hopes.
Bangladesh's journey in the U-19 Women's T20 World Cup came to a bittersweet end on 28 January, as they secured a resounding 10-wicket victory over the West Indies in their final Super Six match.
Despite this commanding win, the Junior Tigresses were eliminated from the tournament due to a heavy defeat against India earlier in the Super Six stage.
The rain-affected match at Bayuemas Oval in Kuala Lumpur was reduced to 13 overs per side. Winning the toss, Bangladesh opted to field first and capitalised on the conditions.
The West Indies struggled against Bangladesh's disciplined bowling, limping to a total of 54 for 6 in their allotted overs.
Amrita Ramtahal top-scored for the Caribbean side with an unbeaten 16 runs, while Naijanni Cumberbatch contributed 13 and Asabi Callender added 11. However, none of the other batters could make a significant impact, with the remaining players failing to reach double figures.
Bangladesh's bowling attack, led by Nishita Akter Nishi, proved to be too strong for the West Indies. Nishi picked up 3 wickets for just 11 runs in her 3 overs, narrowly missing out on a hat-trick. Anisa Akter Soba chipped in with 2 wickets for 13 runs, while Jannatul Mawa took the remaining wicket.
Chasing a modest target of 55, openers Fahima Choya and Juwairia Ferdous ensured there were no hiccups. The duo cruised to the target in just 8.5 overs without losing a wicket. Ferdous remained unbeaten on 25, while Choya finished on 14 not out.
The victory, while emphatic, could not secure a semi-final spot for Bangladesh, as their earlier defeat to India had dashed their hopes.
Nevertheless, the Junior Tigresses ended their campaign on a high note, with wins over Nepal, Scotland, and West Indies during the tournament.
