Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni has revealed that Lionel Messi is eager to play in the 2026 World Cup, though no final decision has been made.

Speaking to DSports, Scaloni emphasised that Messi, along with his teammates, understands that there is still time before the tournament and that the desire to compete remains strong.

"The first thing to say is that both he and his teammates are aware that there is still a reasonable amount of time left, and the desire to play in the World Cup is something he has, just like everyone else," Scaloni said.
He added, "But to confirm it later, we need to let time pass and see how things unfold. He knows very well what we think. What concerns me, the only thing I want, is for him to be happy."
Messi himself has remained cautious when addressing his future with the national team.
Speaking to TN Deportivo, he refrained from making any guarantees, instead saying, "Well, as I always say, I'm just starting the year. Honestly, I'm starting it feeling really, really excited and motivated. Hopefully, I can feel good as the year goes on."
Scaloni also commented on Angel Di Maria's international retirement, confirming that the veteran forward has likely played his last game for Argentina.
"From what he has communicated, it seems to be a definitive conclusion, and in the best possible manner. If he had scripted his own narrative, his book, or his football journey, I doubt he could have envisioned a better ending than the one he achieved," Scaloni said.
Meanwhile, Argentina are on course to secure their place at the 2026 World Cup when the CONMEBOL qualifiers resume in march. La Albiceleste, currently leading the standings with 25 points, will visit Uruguay on 21 march before hosting Brazil at the Estadio Monumental on 25 march.
Victories in both matches could seal their qualification, depending on other results.
