An unidentified gang abducted seven workers and demanded a ransom in Sarai Union under Bandarban's Lama Upazila on Saturday night.
The victims were taken from a mango orchard in the Lulaing area of the upazila's Sarai Union, according to Md Idris, the union's chairman.
"I have heard that the kidnappers have demanded Tk8 lakh as ransom. We have informed the police about the matter. The identities of the victims could not be determined due to the remoteness of the area and a lack of mobile network," Idris said.
"The victims are involved in various trades here but are not locals of Lama. They might have come from adjoining Lohagara and Amirabad in Chattogram," he added.
When contacted, the In-Charge of Kaju Para Police Outpost, Sub-Inspector Md Atiqur Rahman, said he was already on his way to the abduction location and stated that further details would be revealed later.
Regarding the incident, Bandarban Additional Superintendent of Police Md Karim said, "Some hill-based criminal group might be responsible for this. Police and army officials are carrying out rescue operations."
Earlier, on 14 January, a similar incident occurred when assailants abducted seven other workers from the same area and demanded a ransom. A joint force later rescued the victims after a 19-hour operation.
