Journos attacked by 'BNP men' in HC following 1994 Hasina assassination verdict
A group of people attacked journalists soon after the High Court acquitted all accused, including nine individuals who were previously sentenced to death, in the case of the 1994 assassination attempt on then-opposition leader and former prime minister Sheikh Hasina at Ishwardi railway station.
The attack took place in front of the HC's Annex building at around noon today (5 February).
ATN News senior reporter Javed Akhtar was injured in the attack, while the microphone of a reporter was broken.
Several other journalists were also beaten up.
The journalists were waiting for the briefing of the lawyers of the accused in the case.
Suddenly, more than 20 men – allegedly BNP leaders and activists – started a ruckus in the presence of BNP Chairperson's adviser Habibur Rahman Habib.
In addition to boycotting the immediate briefing in protest of the incident, the journalists also staged a sit-in at the Annex premises.
Journalists working at the Supreme Court demanded a fair trial into the incident and the identification of those involved.
Law Reporters Forum condemned the incident, saying that attacks on journalists while performing their professional duties was in no way desirable.
