Tangail flooding deteriorates
Low-lying and char areas of nine upazilas have been inundated
The overall flood situation in Tangail is deteriorating as all the rivers in the district, including the Jamuna, the Bangshi and the Dhaleswari, are flowing above the danger levels.
The low-lying and char areas of Tangail Sadar, Nagarpur, Delduar, Bhuapur, Kalihati, Dhanbari, Gopalpur, Basail and Mirzapur upazilas have been inundated.
Roads and bridges have been damaged. People of the flood-hit areas are suffering from acute crisis of drinking water. Many of them have not got any relief aids.

More than three lakh people have been marooned by flood water in the district. Besides, flood protection embankments in several areas are at risks of collapse. Flooding for the second time has submerged around seven hectares of crop fields.
According to The Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) of Tangail, the first attack of flood this year, which started towards the end of June, damaged 3,839 hectares of crop fields.
In the second spell, flood has inundated 7,000 hectares of crop and vegetable fields, including seedbeds of Aman and Aush rice.
Sirajul Islam, executive engineer of Tangail Water Development Board, said, "Water in the rivers is increasing again. The flood situation will deteriorate further in the district. Work is going on to protect the embankments in several areas. River erosion will be intensified when the flood water will recede."
According to the Water Development Board, the water level of the Dhaleshwari increased by two centimetres on Friday morning and the river was flowing 148 centimetres above the danger mark.
The Jamuna was flowing 76 centimetres above the danger level after its water level increased by 11 centimetres while the Jhinai was flowing 87 centimetres above the danger level the same morning.
Besides, the Bangshi was flowing 65 centimetres above the danger mark after its water level increased by 10 centimetres.
According to the district's relief and rehabilitation office, at least 508 villages under 68 unions of the nine upazilas have been flooded.
Besides, several areas under five municipalities in five upazilas out of the nine are also submerged. Rivers have engulfed 737 houses and two schools completely while 17,456 houses and 63 educational institutions have been submerged by flood water.
Two kilometres of brick-built roads have been completely damaged while 71 kilometres have been damaged partially.
On the other hand, 349 kilometres of kancha roads have been partially damaged by the floods. Besides, five bridges are fully damaged while 43 bridges are damaged partially.
The flood water has also damaged 141 tube-wells and five kilometres of several flood protection embankments.
There are 34 shelter centres in the district, where 3,161 people are staying now.
A total of 92 medical teams have been formed in the flood-hit areas.
