Rifat murder prime accused Nayan Bond killed in ‘crossfire’
Four police personnel, including the additional SP Sahjahan, were also injured in the incident
The prime accused of Barguna’s Rifat Sharif murder case – Sabbir Ahmed alias Nayan Bond – was killed in a gunfight with police in Sadar upazila early Tuesday.
A police force led by Additional SP Ashraf Ullah Taher raided the neighbourhood of one Majid's house, said Barguna Police Super Maruf Hossain, addressing a news briefing at his office.
Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, a group of five or six armed criminals launched an attack on them, forcing them to fire shots in self-defence, Abir Mohammad Hossain, officer-in-charge of Sadar police station, claimed.
After the gunfight, a criminal was seen lying dead on the spot, Abir said, adding that locals later identified him as Nayan Bond.
Four police personnel, including the additional SP Sahjahan, were also injured in the incident, Abir said.
Mohammad Shakhawat Hossen, a local, said he heard four or five gun shots at 4:15am.
Meanwhile, Maruf said other accused killers of Rifat could have been with Nayan during the raid but "they fled instantly”.
“However, they are still under police's surveillance net. We will arrest them as soon as we can," he said.
Maruf said the police could glean more details about the runaway accused if Nayan could be arrested alive.
Nayan's body was found lying on the Payra River embankment, 18km east of Barguna town, with bullet wounds in the chest and right ear.
His body was sent to Barguna General Hospital for autopsy.
A pistol, one round of bullet, one used cartridge and four sharp weapons were recovered from the spot, Abir told The Business Standard.
