Dengue patients go up again

The number of dengue patients across the country has started going up again. However, the number of persons infected with the mosquito-borne disease is comparatively higher in areas outside Dhaka. 

As many as 527 cases of fresh dengue infections were recorded in the 24 hours until 8:am on Saturday, which was the lowest in the last one month on a day-to-day basis. 

But the number began to rise from the following day with 619 and 653 new dengue patients were admitted to different hospitals across the country in the following two days.

Among the 653 patients who were admitted to hospitals on Monday, 193 were admitted to different hospitals in Dhaka while 460 were hospitalised outside Dhaka, according to the Directorate General of Health Services.

With three-fold higher infection rate than that in the capital city, the areas outside Dhaka are now more vulnerable to dengue infection. 

Currently, 2,546 dengue patients are being treated at hospitals across the country. Of them, 1,033 patients are undergoing treatment at hospitals in Dhaka and the other 1,513 are being treated at district-level hospitals.

A total of 81,186 dengue patients were hospitalised across the country this year, according to the health directorate.

It also informed that the Institute of Epidemiology Disease Control and Research has so far reviewed 116 deaths reports and confirmed 68 people died of dengue. The institute has so far received information about 203 deaths.

In Bangladesh, dengue infection was first detected in 2000 when at least 93 people died of the mosquito-borne disease and 5,551 were hospitalised being infected with the virus.
