Home boss not sure how Barguna shootout took place
“However, it is certain that police retaliated fire upon being attacked first”
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal has said he is not sure how the shootout took place in which Nayan, the prime accused of Rifat murder, was killed.
“However, it is certain that police retaliated fire upon being attacked first,” the minister told a roundtable held at the Cirdap Auditorium in Dhaka on Tuesday.
Barguna youth Rifat Sharif was chopped to death in broad daylight on Wednesday in front of his wife. A video of the murder went viral where a group of miscreants were seen stabbing Rifat mercilessly.
A group chat on Facebook Messenger also came to light that revealed the murder was premediated and orchestrated by Nayan.
The video showed the victim’s wife desperately tried to save her husband from the attackers but in vain.
A case was filed against 12 people with Barguna Sadar police station on the same day the incident took place.
The prime minister ordered the law enforcers to arrest the culprits by any means while the High Court termed the gruesome murder as “failure of the people”.
Police later arrested some of the accused while the main culprit Sabbir Ahmed alias Nayan Bond remained on the run.
“Law enforcers and detectives continuously chased the three murderers identified in the footage. Two were held, but Nayan slipped several times as he kept changing his location frequently,” said the home minister.
Barguna police on Tuesday confirmed the death of Nayan. At a press briefing, Police Super Maruf Hossain said Nayan Bond was killed in a gunfight with police in Sadar upazila early Tuesday.
