Arms peddling duo sold guns to militants: Police
Police seized two AK-22 rifles.
Two arms peddlers arrested with AK-22 rifles on Monday have confessed to selling firearms to militants.
Md Kamal Hossain, 35, and Md Sayedul Islam Majumder alias Rubel, 30, told police interrogators that they had been planning to sell the rifles to radical groups, according to police.
Police seized two AK-22 rifles – the same model used in the Gulshan’s Holey Artisan attack – and a loaded magazine with 15 rounds of bullets from their possession on Monday.
They arrested Kamal and Sayedul from Dhaka’s Wari area.
According to police sources, the same model gun was also used in Bogra Shia Masjid attack in 2015 and was found during Narayanganj raid on militant den in 2016.
“They supplied arms previously to militants at least twice,” said Additional Deputy Commissioner of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) Jahangir Alam.
“The duo is just the courier and gets Tk10,000 per assignment. The kingpins are still out there,” said the police official.
Law enforcers have claimed to have yielded “vital information” about the gang.
“We are now looking for others,” added ADC Jahangir.
A case was filed with Wari police station in this regard.
