Ducsu VP Nur released: DB police

Police's detective branch has said they released Nurul Haque Nur, vice president (VP) of Dhaka University Central Students' Union (Ducsu), and six others within one and half hours of arresting them from Matsya Bhaban on Monday night.

Police said Nur and some of his followers brought out a procession and started marching towards Matsya Bhaban from Shahbagh area. Later they clashed with police, who tried to disperse them. They also vandalised some vehicles, police added.

"The detainees were taken to police's detective branch office at Mintu road in the capital initially. Later, Nur was released on undertaking. As the rape case was filed with Lalbagh police station, so we could not show him arrested in that case. Others were also released from the custody," said DB Joint Commissioner Mahbubur Rahman. 

Later, a team of DB police took Nur to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) as he was having breathing issues. 

However, a tense situation is prevailing in DMCH area as Nur's followers has taken position outside the hospital with the demand of immediate release of Nur from police custody.

Earlier on Sunday night, a rape case was filed with Lalbagh police station against VP Nur and five others. The case was filed by a female student of the Islamic Studies department of Dhaka University.

Five other accused of the case are - Bangladesh Chhatra Odhikar Parishad Convener Hassan Al Mamun, 28; Joint Conveners Nazmul Hassan Shohag, 28, and Md Saiful Islam, 28; Vice-President Md Nazmul Huda, 25, and a student of Dhaka University named Md Abdullah Hill Baki, 23. 

According to the case statement, Hasan Al Mamun is the main accused, and Nur helped him along with the others, said Biplob Bijoy Talukder, deputy commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Lalbagh division. 

Nur earlier claimed in a Facebook live video that he had met the plaintiff only one day and also denied the rape allegation. 

What the First Information Report says 

The plaintiff said in the First Information Report (FIR) that she had met Hassan Al Mamun on July 29, 2018, as she was an active member of Bangladesh Sadharan Chhatra Odhikar Parishad.  

A few days later, she fell in love with him, and they would talk on apps such as Facebook Messenger, imo, and WhatsApp. At some point, Hasan indirectly proposed to have physical relationship with her. 

"On January 3 this year, he asked me to go to his house in the capital's Nawabganj. There, he raped me and promised that he would marry me later," she wrote. 

She said she fell sick the following day and was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital with the help of Mamun's friend Sohag on January 12. 

Mamun and Sohag did not allow her to contact campus reporters when she was in hospital. 

"Earlier, when I pressured Mamun to marry me, he agreed. But after I got sick, he started giving excuses," the plaintiff wrote. 

She said she had verbally informed Nur about the matter on June 20 and the latter promised her that he would solve the matter. 

"Nur said Mamun works for his student organisation and is also a fellow protester. On June 24, he came to meet me in Nilkhet with the assurance of settling the matter. He then forbade me to take the matter too far and avoided resolving the matter. He also threatened to post my name on Facebook to share with his fans and shame me as a prostitute if I took the matter too far," she added.
