7 burnt at GPH Ispat factory as melted iron fell on them
Six of them are in a critical condition
At least seven workers, including an Indian citizen, suffered burn injuries when melted iron fell on them at GPH Ispat Ltd, a steel factory in Chattogram's Sitakunda, on Tuesday.
Among them, six are in a critical condition.
The injured are K Wall Singh Sohan (46) – an Indian citizen and son of Tashi Sohan, Shahin Alam (27) – son of Jamal Uddin, Tipu Sultan (32) – son of Abdul Ahad, Shahidul Islam (27) – son of Siraj Ullah, Nuruzzaman (40) – son of Mohammad Ali, Amir Hossain (27) – son of Abdul Hai, and Rabindra (24) – son of Sudarshan.

Firoz Hossain Molla, officer-in-charge of Sitakunda police station, said the accident took place at the factory during working hours. The workers have been sent to Chattogram Medical College Hospital's (CMCH) burn and plastic surgery unit.
Dr Liton Kuman Palit, assistant registrar at the CMCH burn unit, said one of the workers, Tipu Sultan, has been treated and released but conditions of the rest are quite critical.
Their faces and throats have been severely burnt. They have been transferred to Dhaka Medical College at 7:30pm for the intensive care unit support, added Dr Palit.
Alauddin Talukdar, assistant sub-inspector of CMCH police outpost, said the injured were taken to the CMCH at around 3:30pm.
When contacted, Kamrul Islam, executive director of GPH Ispat Ltd, said, "I do not know anything about it [the accident] as I did not go to the factory on Tuesday."
Additional Managing Director of the factory Almas Shimul could not be reached for comments.
In 2017, 11 workers were burnt in a furnace blast accident at the GPH Ispat.
