Prices to come down once imported onions fully enter market: Ministry

The Commerce Ministry on Tuesday said that there is no shortage of onions in the country and the prices will come down once the imported onions enter the market.
The Ministry made the statement in a press release issued in this regard.
The Ministry said that onions imported at public and private levels have started arriving in the country.
There are adequate stocks of domestically grown onions in the country and the cultivating farmers have increased the sales of these onions in the market. As a result, the import and supply of onions in the market has increased, the release said.
The Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB), under the Ministry of Commerce, is selling onions through makeshift stores as well as through e-commerce platform across the country for the purpose of providing onions to the buyers at affordable prices.

Using last year's experience, the Ministry said that the government has taken necessary steps to keep the stock, supply and price of onions in the market as per the demand.
Market campaigns have been intensified under the leadership of local administrations across the country, including the National Consumer Rights Protection Directorate under the Ministry of Commerce, the release said.
The Ministry said that the government has withdrawn tariffs on onion imports and all kinds of assistance is being provided as per importers' demand.
Work is being done with utmost importance in all fields, including supply and transportation of onions in the domestic market, the release added.
The Ministry provided reassurances that there is no reason to panic about onion supply. If any attempt is made to increase the price of onions by creating an illegal stockpile or any other artificial crisis, It reaffirmed its commitment to take strict action against those responsible under the existing laws.
