Heritage Handloom Festival to start tomorrow
This year the festival will be organised virtually due to the Covid-19 pandemic
The Heritage Handloom Festival is due to start tomorrow. The program is likely to be inaugurated by Education Minister Dipu Moni.
The SME Foundation and the Association of Fashion Designers Bangladesh (AFDB) are organising the festival for the third time in a row.
"The festival is being arranged to prevent the extinction of the glorious heritage and culture of Bangladesh, to create a local and international market for the product and, above all, to create employment," said Md Safiqul Islam, managing director of SME Foundation.

"The festival also has worked to establish links between weavers and top designers," he added.
This year the festival will be organised virtually due to the Covid-19 pandemic, said the managing director of SME Foundation.
"In a seamless blend of artistic creativity from diverse cultures and traditions, the exhibition will have over 70 stalls displaying unique products like: saris, lungis, gamchas, khadis, nakshi kanthas, benarsi saris, Tangail saris, jamdani saris, manipuri cloth, products of minority ethnic groups, etc." said Mantasha Ahmed, president of AFDB.
She said weavers have been trained and mentored so that they can use the online platform.
The online page of the fair will display weaving, documentaries on the history of sector-based products as well as live fashion shows.
The festival will feature: music performances by folk artists, quizzes and photo contests on local costumes, seminars, plus buyer-seller matchmaking events.
