Nearly 5,000 tonnes of hazardous products stored at four ports

Almost 5,000 metric tonnes of combustible, explosive and other hazardous products are stored at four ports across Bangladesh.

The information was revealed at an inter-ministerial meeting on Wednesday about taking precautionary measures for safe transportation, handling and maintenance of hazardous items at the seaports as well as land ports, according to a press release.

The meeting was called by the State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, added the press release.

Participants at the meeting said at least 535 metric tonnes of combustible, explosive and hazardous goods are stored in different sheds at Chittagong Port, while 163 metric tonnes of risky goods are at the port, waiting to be auctioned by Chittagong Customs. 

Meanwhile, the Benapole Land Port has 4269.39 metric tonnes of hazardous products, while the amount for Banglabandha Land Port is 7.6 metric tonnes.

Also, 7.2 kilogrammes of dangerous goods were unloaded at Mongla Port on 20 September this year.

However, the authorities concerned said in order to overcome the problems, the existing combustible, explosive and hazardous materials storage shed, or P-shed, has been renovated at Chittagong Port, where a fire service system as well as separate entry and exit for hazardous goods are available. 

Meeting participants said measures have also been taken to build a shed befitting the conservation of the risky goods. Initiatives have also been taken to create awareness and organise trainings for officials.

The shipping minister has directed the different port authorities to ensure overall security at the ports plus exercise the safe handling and storage of combustible, explosive and hazardous goods.
