Moving towards a lawless society: Shahdeen Malik

Eminent jurist Dr Shahdeen Malik said Bangladesh is gradually heading towards becoming a lawless society where there will be no law, no security and no justice according to the law. 

He made the remark at a seminar in the National Press Club on Saturday titled "Recommendations from UN on preventing disappearance, and reality in Bangladesh."

"Illegal casino businesses are being run right under the police's nose, but the police say they do not know anything about it," said Malik at the seminar organised by the Committee for the Protection of Fundamental Rights.

"Corruption is everywhere. It started with extrajudicial killing and forceful disappearance," he said.

"We can see the consequences of extrajudicial killings and forceful disappearances from other countries that applied them. None of us want to see that society."

The Supreme Court Lawyer said that many people in Bangladesh think that drug problems can be resolved by killing hundreds of people with bullets. That is not possible at all.

"Our concern is that we are moving towards a totally lawless society. I do not know whether the people who run the country are aware of the outcome of such a situation."

Referring to the situation at the universities, the eminent citizen said that vice-chancellors of universities do not even know how to speak Bangla properly. 

Shirin Haque of Naripokkho, a non-government organisation, presided over the seminar. Dr CR Abrar, a professor of International Relations at Dhaka University and Dr Asif Nazrul, professor of law at the same institution, among others, were present at the seminar.
