Tigress Jaya gives birth to 3 cubs in Chattogram Zoo, 2 die
after giving birth to the three cubs, Jaya unfortunately did not fed the cubs breast milk
Jaya, a tigress in Chattogram Zoo, recently gave birth to three cubs on 14 November. But due to her own negligence, two of them died after birth.
Dr Md Shahadat Hossain, curator of the zoo, said after giving birth to the three cubs, Jaya unfortunately did not fed the cubs breast milk. Her reaction was not motherly what finally resulted into deaths of the two cubs.
"A cub died on 15 November while another died three days later," he said, adding that the remaining cub is now being fed in an artificial way.
The cub is now doing little well, but not fully risk-free yet. Its condition will be out of danger if it continues taking food for a month, he mentioned.
Considering its safety and risk of infection, the cub has been kept at an isolated place. In addition, none except the care givers are being allowed to visit the cub.
Tigers, the largest extant cat species and a member of the genus Panthera, are globally listed as 'Endangered' on the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species.
The number of tigers are lowering across the globe due to different causes, including shrinking living place, unethical hunting. The tigress kept at zoos now rarely gives birth to cubs.
