65 organisations demand arrest of Hefazat leaders
"A vested quarter has threatened to throw away the sculpture of Bangabandhu into the Buriganga River, which is utter arrogance and disrespect to the father of nation, constitution and the spirit of liberation war"
Sixty-five organisations, including political, social, cultural and professionals' ones, have demanded the arrest of Hefazat-e-Islam Amir Junaid Babunagari, its joint secretary Mamunul Haque and their associates for showing disrespect to the father of nation, constitution, and spirit of the liberation war.
They formed a human chain near the Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital on Tuesday and placed a seven-point demand, including the arrest of Hefazat leaders, reports Prothom Alo.
Ekattorer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee organised the programme. Later, some other political, social, cultural and professional organisations joined them.
The speakers said sculpture is a part of a country's history and culture. All the Muslim-majority countries, including Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Iran, Pakistan and Indonesia, have sculptures. But in Bangladesh, a vested quarter is deliberately making instigating remarks against it.
The quarter has threatened to throw away the sculpture of Bangabandhu into the Buriganga River, which is utter arrogance and disrespect to the father of nation, constitution and the spirit of liberation war, they also said.
Senior journalist Abed Khan read out a manifesto on the occasion.
It said the fundamentalist leaders of Hefazat, being backed by BNP-Jamaat, are opposing the installation of sculptures by holding rallies in the guise of 'waz' across the country. They want to turn Bangladesh into a terrorist state.
