It was not what it ought to be. We were prepared for it to happen so there was no surprise.
A few days ahead of December 16 many people were talking about the surrender.
I went to the racecourse maidan (present-day Suhrawardy Udyan) to hear Bangabandhu's speech on March 7, and on December 16, I wanted to be there again to see the surrender, but I couldn't go.

From the morning we were getting news of people arriving in Dhaka from different parts of the country.
The surrender was happening for real, but there were no celebrations as such. The army jeeps and trucks were all around the city.
We were excited to be liberated, but also saddened for what we have lost – our families and loved ones.
