DSCC to celebrate Shakrain by flying 10,000 kites
With the slogan ‘Let's fly kite, cherish the tradition’ the festival will continue from 2pm to 8pm Thursday
Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) has outlined a plan to celebrate the annual Shakrain festival (Paush Shangkranti) on Thursday by flying 10,000 kites in 75 wards.
The initiative was taken by the DSCC's Standing Committee on Sports and Culture, said DSCC Public Relations Officer Abu Naser.
"We will supply 100 kites for each councillor. Apart from this, those who want will also be able to take part in the festival by flying their kites from the roof of their house," he said.

With the slogan 'Let's fly kite, cherish the tradition' the festival will continue from 2pm to 8pm on 14 January (Thursday).
DSCC Standing Committee on Sports and Culture Chairman Mokaddes Hossain Zahid said the festival is a tradition of old Dhaka. "Over time, this tradition has spread across the country beyond the boundaries of old Dhaka," he added.
Zahid noted that the kite festival will be organised for the first time in line with the initiative announced by the DSCC Mayor for the preservation and promotion of Dhaka's heritage.
ABM Amin Ullah Nuri, chief executive officer of DSCC, said that the event will play the role of a milestone in preserving and restoring the heritage of old Dhaka.
Anindita Roy, a resident of old Dhaka told the Business Standard that the preparations for the Shakrain festival are already underway.
"However, law enforcement agencies often impose stricter restrictions on the festival. If there is a little relaxation this year, I think it will be good," she added.
