Hotel workers demand to stop layoff amid Covid pandemic
“We sent letters to various departments of the government not to stop paying our wages amid lockdown. Even with a memorandum to the Prime Minister's Office, we have failed to find a solution”
Bangladesh Hotel Restaurant Sweet Bakery Workers Union has demanded to stop illegal activities including firing workers from hotels including Star Hotel on the pretext of Covid-19 pandemic.
Speakers made the demand at a human chain and protest rally held in front of the National Press Club on Saturday morning.
"We sent letters to various departments of the government not to stop paying our wages amid lockdown. Even with a memorandum to the Prime Minister's Office, we have failed to find a solution," said Akhtaruzzaman Khan, president of the organisation.
Stating that the employers are firing the workers without paying their arrears, he added that the hotel workers have been on duty for 18 hours but the wages have not been paid.
He said that the situation has forced them to protest.
They will continue their protest for the implementation of the workers' law, said the workers.
