BNP’s CCC candidate Shahadat attacked
The attackers also hit the car carrying the mayoral candidate, smashing its glass and headlight
Dr Shahadat Hossain, BNP-nominated mayor candidate for the upcoming Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) polls, and his supporters came under attack while campaigning on Saturday noon in the port city.
Some Chhatra League and Jubo League activists attacked the candidate's fleet of cars he and his supporters were campaigning in the port city's Halishahar Bakery area, claimed Maruful Haque Chowdhury, personal secretary to Shahadat Hossain.
"After completing our campaign rounds, when we were on our way back home, a group of Chhatra League and Jubo League men abruptly attacked us, injuring four of our supporters," Maruful Haque told The Business Standard.
"The attackers also hit the car carrying candidate Dr Shahadat Hossain, smashing its glass and headlight," he added.
Hossain told the media that he would file a written complaint with the Election Commission about the incident.
After hearing about the incident, Returning Officer Mohammad Hasanuzzaman said they instantly ordered the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the area in question to take necessary steps.
"If the BNP candidate submits any written complaint to the Election Commission, we will also take legal action after investigating the matter," he added.
Chittagong City Corporation elections are scheduled to be held on 27 January.
