Water transport strike called off
Leaders of water transport workers said they would continue the strike until launch masters Ruhul Amin and Jamal Hossain are granted bail
Hours after calling an indefinite strike on water transport, workers have withdrawn their decision after a meeting with Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA).
The vessel movement will resume from Monday night across the country as decided in the meeting, Somoy TV reports.
Earlier in the day, the workers called for the indefinite strike in protest of the imprisonment of two launch masters-- Ruhul Amin and Jamal Hossain in a case filed last year over a launch accident.
According to the workers, two launches -- Adventure-1 and Adventure-9 collided in Meghna River amid dense fog in the winter season last year on Dhaka-Barishal waterway.
Although there were no casualties, the certificates of four people, including the master of the two launches, were confiscated for four months.
A district judge sent Ruhul Amin and Jamal Hossain to jail after they appeared before the court for attendance in the case today.
