Sanjoy Somadder: I haven’t been able to demonstrate 50% of my talent or capability

Sanjoy Somadder has gained popularity as a director for his web contents. His latest works "Shikol" and "Troll" have earned him praise among netizens. During the upcoming Valentine's Day, a few contents directed by Sanjoy will be released as well.
He has also received the RTV Star Award as a director.
In a conversation with The Business Standard, the promising director talked about his contemporary works and his journey towards becoming a director.

TBS: Why did you choose this profession?
No matter how challenging the profession is, if you have love for the profession, everything becomes easier. I love directing. And I believe this is something I can do. Therefore, I chose to be in this profession.
TBS: Tell us about your journey towards becoming a director.
I have traveled a long way. The journey wasn't easy. I started my career as a writer. Later on, I began working as a creator. However, I didn't get the money for making dramas. So, I made short films instead. I made music videos afterwards.
Eventually, I started making dramas, besides making OVCS and TVCS. I took every opportunity I got. Eventually, I started following my own path in terms of content, and audiences began to recognise my work.
TBS: Your dramas or content always convey various messages. Do you plan it, or does it come naturally while writing the script?
It is not true that my dramas or contents always have a message. But I have some social responsibilities as a human, or as a creator. If I can create awareness on various issues through the visual medium, I believe it is fascinating.
TBS: Do you plan on taking risks and working with emerging actors?
I always like challenges while telling a story. I have plans of working with newcomers in the near future.
TBS: What's your story selection process?
I always select a story based on its subject and then if it meets my philosophy. I believe in versatility.
TBS: Your latest directorial venture is "Troll." Tell us about its background story.
"Troll" is a 10-minute web content. It was very difficult to make it in such a short time. Everybody in the crew worked so hard for it.
TBS: What are the biggest challenges while making good content these days?
In order to get better content, we need smart producers. They decide the budget for each production. I have accepted that the road is bumpy but we have to work harder. I believe good days are waiting for us in the future.
TBS: How do you evaluate yourself as a director?
I haven't been able to demonstrate 50% of my talent or capability. Or I didn't get the chance to do so as I haven't able to tell my best stories as yet. I didn't get the budget I needed.
And it's difficult to evaluate myself, I would leave it upto my audiences.
TBS: When are you going to make a feature length film?
I am ready with a story. Waiting for the right time and opportunity.
TBS: As a director what's your dream?
It's wise not to talk about your dreams. But, I would try to create opportunities so that we can make global standard content locally. I just want to keep working, as it is our work that decides our destiny.
