Grameenphone awarded highest taxpayer in telecom sector
This is the fifth time in a row that the company earned the recognition from the National Board of Revenue
The National Board of Revenue (NBR) awarded Grameenphone the highest taxpayer award fifth time in a row for the tax year 2019-2020.
The tax card and award-giving ceremony took place at the NBR headquarter in the capital on 11 February, read a press release.
Grameenphone CEO Yasir Azman and CFO Jens Becker received the tax card, certificate, and crest from the State Minister of Public Administration Farhad Hossain and Chairman of National Board of Revenue Abu Hena Md Rahmatul Muneem.
According to the press release, Grameenphone had previously won the award for the tax year 2015-2016, 2016-2017, 2017-2018, and 2018-2019 in the telecommunication category.
Yasir Azman, CEO of Grameenphone at the ceremony said, "The acknowledgement by NBR makes us feel honoured and humbled. During the unprecedented time in 2020, NBR supported several of our operations which enabled us to serve the nation better.
We are thankful to NBR for their encouragement. This recognition will inspire us to innovate and contribute more to the development and digitalization of Bangladesh."
Since its inception to 31 December 2020, total contribution by Grameenphone to the national exchequer is Tk853.73 billion (85,373 crores) which includes a contribution to the NBR Tk589.48 billion (58,948 Crore) as direct and indirect tax, withholding tax Tk88.98 billion (8,898 Crore), and contribution to BTRC Tk175.27 billion (17,527 Crore).
During the award-giving ceremony, NBR selected 141 taxpayers – out of which 76 individual taxpayers received the recognition. Others including 53 corporate taxpayers and 12 in other categories were also recognised.
