Plying of easy bikes on highways needs to be controlled: Tawfiq-e-Elahi
The energy adviser to the prime minister also suggested undertaking an initiative to make sure that easy bikes are charged during the off-peak hours
Movement of slow-moving easy bikes and other three-wheelers on the highways has to be controlled on a priority basis in order to curb road accidents, said Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury, energy adviser to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
These types of vehicles could be an ideal mode of transport on local roads but not on highways, he observed.
Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury was speaking as chief guest at a virtual seminar entitled "Development of a Design Standard for Easy Bike in Bangladesh" arranged by the Bangladesh Energy and Power Research Council (BEPRC) on Thursday.

Urging the authorities concerned to take immediate initiatives for registering easy bikes, the prime minister's energy adviser said, "An initiative could be undertaken to make sure that easy bikes are charged during the off-peak hours when electricity consumption drops. It will help power distribution companies handle the off-peak and peak hours problems."
Currently, there are more than 13 lakh easy bikes and three-wheelers across the country.
Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) professors Dr Md Ahsan, Dr A Salam Akand, Dr Md Ziaur Rahman Khan also spoke at the seminar.
The standardisation of easy bikes will help to improve security of life and employment generation, while the government also will have another source of revenue.
Md Habibur Rahman, secretary of the Power Division, and Mohammad Hossain, director general of the Power Cell of the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, among others, also addressed the seminar presided over by Zakia Sultana, chairman of the BEPRC.
