Bangabandhu’s 50 feet high index finger being built
A sculpture of 50 feet high index finger of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman is being built to mark the golden jubilee of Bangladesh's independence.
The standing committee on sports and culture of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) is making the sculpture which will be displayed on 15 March at the Bangabandhu National Stadium on the day of the final match of the inter-ward sports competition. Later it will be permanently placed in front of Dhaka South City Corporation.
Mosaddek Hossain Zahid, president of the committee and a ward councillor at DSCC, said Bangabandhu raised his index finger and called for our independence through his speech.
"This index finger of Bangabandhu is an inspiration for us. Every time I see his index finger, I think of Bangabandhu's ideology."
Asaduzzaman Asad, member of the committee and counselor at ward 21 at DSCC, said Bangabandhu used his index finger to call for a strong movement against the Pakistanis. He called people for prepare for independence.
"Seeing Bangabandhu's index finger creates a different feeling. It will repeatedly remind the new generation of freedom," added Asaduzzaman who has designed the sculpture.
Besides, a rare picture from 1940 of teenager Bangabandhu wearing a jersey and holding a trophy will be displayed at the programm. The picture was drawn by Mosazzem Hossain Johnny, a former student of Fine Arts at Dhaka University.
The sponsor of the photo and the sculpture is Modhumoti Bank and the co-sponsor is Orion Group.
