Home minister to sit with truckers Wednesday over strike

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan is going to sit in a meeting with the leaders of Bangladesh Truck Covered-Van Owners and Workers Oikya Parishad on Wednesday to discuss over the strike they called following enforcement of Road Transport Act 2018.

Talukder Mohammed Monir, joint convenor of the parishad, told the Business Standard that five transport leaders had one-hour-long meeting with the minister at his Tejgaon residence on Tuesday night to discuss the issue. 

"The home minister told us that Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader has asked him to settle the matter," Monir added.

"The home minister urged us to withdraw the strike immediately, but we could not, as it needed decision from top workers' leaders. 

"Transport leaders will join the meeting at 8pm tomorrow at minister's Dhanmandi home, where workers' leaders from Khulna and North Bengal will also be present," he said further. 

Home minister's Public Relations Officer Sharif Mahmud Apu has confirmed The Business Standard about the meeting, but he could not mention any exact time.

The goods transport owners and workers announced Tuesday that they will go for an indefinite strike across the country from 6am Wednesday to press home their nine-point charter of demands for amending the Road Transport Act 2018.
