3 Chattogram doctors sued for stillbirth
The accused are – Managing Director Dr Liakot Ali Khan, Consultant Dr Afroza Ferdous and Dr AHM Rakibul Huque of Max Hospital
A man has sued three doctors of a private hospital in Chattogram for negligence that led to the death of his unborn child.
The accused are – Managing Director Dr Liakot Ali Khan, Consultant Dr Afroza Ferdous and Dr AHM Rakibul Huque of the Max Hospital.
Dr Afroza is also an assistant professor of gynaecology at the Chittagong Medical College Hospital.
Victim's husband Md Eusuf Alam Masud on Sunday filed the case with the Chattogram Metropolitan Magistrate's Court.
The court sent the case to the Police Bureau of Investigation (PIB) for investigation.
According to the case statement, Sharmin Akter was under the supervision of Dr Afroaza since April 4 after her conception.
On June 5, Sharmin had an ultrasound test done and her doctor fixed December 11 for the probable delivery.
Later, Dr Afroaza deferred the delivery date to December 17 following another ultrasound examination on October 10.
On December 1, Sharmin was taken to Dr Afroza at the Max Hospital with severe abdomen pain. She prescribed her some medicines and suggested an ultrasonography test.
Sharmin had an ultrasound examination done on that night by Dr AHM Rakibul. The physician, who allegedly had conducted the test in just five minutes, said the position of the baby was right and the December 17 delivery date should not be changed.
Sharmin's husband went to Dr Afroza with the ultrasound report the next day when she kept the delivery date unchanged.
As Sharmin felt abdomen pain on December 3, she was rushed to the Chittagong Metropolitan Hospital where she gave birth to a stillborn baby the same day.
Victim's husband Eusuf Alam told The Business Standard that his baby died because of doctors' negligence.
On June 28 in 2018, another allegation of negligence was raised against the Max Hospital after a four-year-old child named Rafida Khan Raifa died there. Later, Rafida's father filed a case.
A mobile court fined the hospital with Tk10 lakh for irregularities.
