TIB for independent banking commission to reform the sector

The Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) on Sunday urged the government to bring the people, involved in corruption and financial scandal in the banking sector, under trial and ensure their punishment.  

It also demanded that an independent banking commission be formed to bring about reforms in the sector.

The demands were made at a human chain in front of the National Parliament on Manik Mia Avenue, marking the International Anti-Corruption Day to be observed on Monday. 

The anti-graft watchdog also demanded cancellation of the controversial clauses under the Digital Security Act, the Foreign Donations (Voluntary Activities) Regulation Act, and the Sarkari Chakori Ain (Public Service Act). 

It also called for forming combined and complementary strategies among judiciary, administration and law enforcing agencies; ensuring transparency in the recruitment process of constitutional organisations; and ensuring security of information seeker according to the Right to Information Act (RTI). 

Other demands of the TIB included building a congenial atmosphere for the implementation of Public‐interest Information Disclosure Act (Provide Protection) and strengthening the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).  

TIB Executive Director Dr Iftekharuzzaman said, ''The current anti-corruption move has created a new hope among the people. But this is not the prime minister's responsibility alone; all others, including the ACC, have to be more responsible.''

The members of some associate organisations of TIB were also present at the programme.
