Indian celebrities join citizenship law protest

Citizens all over India are taking to the streets to protest against the controversial Citizenship law. The protesters are also being quite vocal on social media. 

The protest is getting lots of support from celebrities as well.

Over the past three days, celebrities including Farhan Akhtar, Hrithik Roshan, Priyanka Chopra, Aparna Sen, Kangana Ranaut, and Sushant Singh among others have expressed their concern over the ongoing protests that have turned violent in many cities.

Farhan Akhtar participates in the protest on Mumbai

Actor Farhan Akhtar on Wednesday said he will be hitting the streets to protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act as he believes that the time to express outrage on social media alone is over.

The actor took to Twitter to announce that he will be taking part in a protest to be held on Thursday at August Kranti Maidan in Mumbai. He kept his promise and showed up at the protest. 

At the protest, Farhan Akhtar said, "As a citizen of the country and as somebody who was born and has grown up with a certain idea of India, it is important for me to raise my voice. If everything was ok, why would so many people turn up? Not just in Mumbai, but Delhi, Assam, Bangalore, Hyderabad."

He also criticised Mumbai police for their actions on Twitter. 

Hrithik Roshan expresses concern over the situation

Actor Hrithik Roshan has also expressed concern over the current situation and protests in distinctive areas of the country over the Citizenship law, on Wednesday. 

The 45-year-old actor took to Twitter to raise his concern on the ongoing situation in the capital.

"As a parent and a citizen of India, I am deeply saddened by the unrest across various educational institutions of our country. I hope and pray for peace to return as soon as possible. Great teachers learn from their students. I salute the world's youngest democracy," Hrithik wrote on Twitter.

Priyanka Chopra speaks against the police action on students

Actor Priyanka Chopra, who is also a global UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and works towards the cause of education, has spoken against the police action on students protesting against the Citizenship law.

The actor took to Twitter to express her views.

"Education for every child is our dream. Education is what empowered them to think independently. We have raised them to have a voice. In a thriving democracy, to raise one's voice peacefully and be met with violence is wrong. Every voice counts. And each voice will work towards changing India. #HaveVoiceWillRaise #HaveVoiceMustRaise," Priyanka wrote on her Tweeter.

Aparna Sen participates in a protest at Kolkata

Prominent filmmaker Aparna Sen participated in a protest against the Citizenship law and National Register of Citizens (NRC) at Kolkata on Thursday.

"Ours is a sub-continent that has many languages, cultures and ethnicities. It is held together by a tenuous thread that is secularism. If that thread breaks, then the country breaks up," she told ANI.

Popular TV show 'Savdhaan India' ends as host Sushant Singh participates in protest

Earlier on Tuesday, Actor Sushant Singh announced that his association with long-running TV show Savdhaan India has ended following his participation in the protests against the Citizenship law. 

The actor, who has been part of the show as its host since 2011, shared the news on Twitter, hinting that his participation in the protests may have been the reason behind his exit.

Commenting on his post, a user wondered whether it was the "price" he paid for "speaking the truth". To this, the actor said, "A very small price my friend.

Kangana Ranaut lashes out her Bollywood colleagues

Actor Kangana Ranaut has lashed out her Bollywood colleagues for their perceived silence over recent protests which were organised against the Citizenship law, calling a section of the industry 'sissies', 'cowards' and 'spineless'.

"The actors should be ashamed of themselves. I have no illusions about the fact that Bollywood is full of cowards who are full of themselves," Kangana told the Time of India in an interview.

Shabana Azmi expresses her support on the protest

Veteran actress and social activist Shabana Azmi on Thursday took to microblogging site Twitter to express her staunch support for the nationwide protests against the Citizenship law and said she hoped that the Centre would listen to the voices of protestors instead of suppressing them.

In a short video, which was trolled on social media, the actress recited a poem and said: "I stand against CAA." She also sought answers on the new law and captioned the post "Jawab Do". Twitteratti responded to the post with poems of their own and a few netizens trolled the actress for her views.

She also shared video footages of the protest on her Twitter.
