Ferry capsize: Rescue operations resume for 2nd day

Emergency workers and rescue teams have resumed their operation on Thursday to recover the capsized ro-ro ferry Amanat Shah.

Emergency workers engaged in the rescue operation pulled up the van at around 11:30am.
There are still four more trucks under or near the capsized ferry, authorities said.
"The second phase of the rescue operation was launched around 8:30 am on Thursday. After a three-hour effort, a courier service van was recovered," Shariful Islam, executive engineer (dredging) of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) at Aricha, told The Business Standard.
All the sunken trucks will be recovered in phases. After that, another 5 trucks that have sunken in the River Padma will be recovered, he added.
Shariful Islam said that the rescue ship, "Prottoy" will be joining the rescue efforts shortly.
The ro-ro ferry Amanat Shah capsized in the River Padma near the ghat no 5 at Paturia in Manikganj on Wednesday.
"The ferry, that capsized on Wednesday, was carrying several good laden trucks. Rescue operations are underway," said BIWTC Deputy General Manager (DGM) at Aricha Zillur Rahman.
Out of the sunken trucks, five trucks have been recovered so far.
