Unopposed elections not desirable in democratic system: EC Mahbub
EVMs will be used everywhere in the sixth phase of elections
Unopposed elections are not desirable in a democratic system, said Election Commissioner Mahbub Talukdar.
He said this in response to a question from a journalist after a meeting regarding the fourth phase of the union parishad elections at Chattogram Circuit House on Tuesday.
Citing a news report, EC Mahbub said some 360 chairmen and 1,600 candidates of other seats were elected unopposed in the recent union parishad elections, which is a fairly dangerous trend.
"We must think if the situation can be improved by changing how things are done," he added.
During Tuesday's meeting, EC Mahbub talked with the staff of the regional election office in Chattogram about the difficulties they faced so far in organising fair and neutral elections and discussed how the process can be improved.
"Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) will be used everywhere in the sixth phase of elections," he said, optimistic about moving towards a more fair and acceptable election system.
Among the participants present at the meeting were Chattogram Divisional Commissioner Kamrul Hasan, Chattogram Range DIG Anwar Hossain, Additional Divisional Commissioner Md Mizanur Rahman, Chattogram Deputy Commissioner Md Mominur Rahman, Khagrachari Deputy Commissioner Protap Chandra Biswas, Bandarban Deputy Commissioner Yasmin Parveen Tirbizi, Regional Election Officer Hasanuzzaman, and Chattogram Metropolitan Police Commissioner Saleh Md Tanveer.
