Quality of universities falling – UGC chair

The chairman of University Grants Commission (UGC) Professor Dr Kazi Shahidullah said that the quality of both public and private universities in Bangladesh is decreasing day by day because of the absence of skilled teachers.

The UGC chairman was speaking at a workshop titled "Present and Future condition of Private University Institutional Quality Assurance Cell" at the conference hall of the commission today.  

"The vice-chancellors don't appoint teachers based on talents. As a result, many less-qualified candidates become teachers, and later they fail not serve the universities properly," he said during his speech.

"Teaching is not only a job but responsibility to build the future generation. Unfortunately, in Bangladesh, majority of the teachers consider teaching as their job. That is why we are getting sub-standard human capital every year," he added. 

Kazi Shahidullah also underscored on collective efforts to restore the image of the universities. 
"Every university must obey the UGC rules and regulations. We will not tolerate irregularities in opening departments and enrolling students without the commission's concern. Three private universities have been fined for breaching the UGC's rules recently," said the UGC chair. 

UGC Member Professor Dr Mohammad Alamgir presided over the programme while its members Professor Dr Dil Afroza Begum and Professor Sazzad Hossain, and Member of Bangladesh Accreditation Council Dr Sonjoy Kumar Odhikari spoke at the occasion.
