PM to inaugurate National Insurance Day on March 1
To mark the occasion, five eminent personalities will get special honours for their significant contribution to the insurance sector
The National Insurance Day will be celebrated in Bangladesh on March 1 for the first time in the country's history.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to inaugurate the event at a ceremony at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in Dhaka. Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal will preside over the event, which will begin at 10am.
The day will be observed with the theme "Bima diboshe shopoth kori, unnoto desh gori" roughly translated as "We take oath on the insurance day, to build a developed country."
On March 1, 1960, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman started working at the then Alpha Insurance Company. Therefore, the government has decided to celebrate this day as the National Insurance Day every year.
The decision in this regard was made at a cabinet meeting on January 15 this year, said Insurance Development & Regulatory Authority's (IDRA) Chairman Md Shafiqur Rahman Patwary at a press conference on Thursday.
Addressing the conference, the IDRA chairman said, "The National Insurance Day will be observed with events such as rallies, discussion programmes and insurance fair to increase public awareness regarding insurance and the development of this sector.
"The day will be observed in all districts across the country. Besides, a rally will also be organised on the Manik Mia Avenue in the capital at 9am on February 29."
To mark the occasion, five eminent personalities will get special honours for their significant contribution to this sector.
They are Jiban Bima Corporation's former managing director Khoda Box and former chairman Shamsul Alam, Sadharan Bima Corporation's former managing director Golam Mawla, Bangladesh General Insurance Company Ltd's founding chairman MA Samad, and Delta Life Insurance Company's former managing director Shafayet Ahmed.
A one-day insurance fair will be held at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre on the National Insurance Day. The fair will have 79 stalls. Among those, 33 stalls will belong to life insurance companies and the other 46 to non-life insurance companies.
