BNP leader Amir Khasru demands postponing Chattogram city polls
BNP will decide over the election at its standing committee meeting on Saturday
BNP Standing Committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury called for postponing the Chattogram City Corporation election scheduled for March 29.
There is no alternative to halting the polls to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus, said the former minister at a press conference at his Chattogram residence on Friday.
He asked whether the Election Commission would take responsibility if voters got infected after going to polling centres.
The coronavirus, according to experts, is spreading rapidly via hands, Khasru said, adding if any infected person touches electronic voting machines, the virus would spread fast which will be very dangerous.
People are already scared due to the outbreak of the coronavirus. Amid this situation, they should not be pushed to risks. The election should be postponed thereby, he also said.
The election commission does not have the right to drive the people towards risky situations in the name of constitutional obligations, he added.
Khasru further said Bangladesh Nationalist Party will decide over the election at its standing committee meeting on Saturday.
