Respect for opposition views is essential for free and fair elections: UN special rapporteur
The UN special rapporteur earlier issued statement on repressing BNP's political programmes in December last year
UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Association and Peaceful Assembly Clement Voule wrote on Twitter (X), "Respecting dissenting voices is key for fair and free elections."
Using the #Bangladesh hashtag, he wrote, "Amid escalating violence & arrests during ongoing protests, I urge all parties to exercise restraint. I remind authorities of their duty to guarantee the right to p/assembly & refrain from using exces/ force."
The UN special rapporteur added the image of a Bangladeshi flag to the tweet published at 11:26pm yesterday (31 July).
Earlier, the UN special rapporteur issued separate statements on repressing BNP's political programmes in December last year and the suppression of protesters during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Bangladesh in May 2021.
He also added the two previous statements with the tweet he made today.
