Rampage by Sayeedi supporters disrupted treatment, created terrifying situation: BSMMU
Seven public and private vehicles including ambulances and hospital infrastructure were damaged during the rampage
A terrifying situation was created at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University after news broke that convicted war criminal Delwar Hossain Sayeedi had died at the hospital, the BSMMU authority said yesterday.
Treatments of patients were disrupted due to the gatherings, processions and slogans by Sayeedi supporters, the hospital said in a press statement yesterday.
The statement said seven public and private vehicles including ambulances and hospital infrastructure were damaged during the rampage on the night of 14 August after news of Sayeedi's death at the hospital had spread.
According to the statement, Sayeedi supporters vandalised hospital infrastructure and attacked the police, creating panic among the patients and health service providers at the hospital.
Later, the law enforcement agencies intervened to disperse the gatherings and processions in order to safeguard government property as well as the lives of the general public.
Consequently, they were able to restore normalcy within the hospital environment, said the media release.
Meanwhile, Dr Mustafa Zaman, a cardiologist at BSMMU, filed a general diary (GD) at Dhanmondi police station on Tuesday after receiving death threats over the death of Delwar Hossain Sayeedi.
Sayeedi, convicted in a war crimes case, was admitted to BSMMU on 13 August evening and died there on Tuesday night. His body was released from BSMMU on early Wednesday.
As the news of his death spread, hundreds of his supporters clashed with law enforcers in an attempt to prevent authorities from moving the dead body of the convicted war criminal to Pirojpur.
On Wednesday, clashes erupted across the country between supporters of the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and law enforcers over the burial of Sayeedi's body.
The violence killed at least one person and injured several dozens.
