The government and its ministers concerned do not seem to realise the importance of the prevailing crisis in the country caused by the endemic Covid-19.
Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, general secretary of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), said this at a press conference at the BNP chairperson's Gulshan office on Friday.
"A festival of rice embezzlement is going on in the country amid this fatal situation," Fakhrul said.
He also said these incidents of rice embezzlement reminded him of the time when Bangabandhu had ruled. Bangabandhu once said, "Others have got the gold mine, but we have got a mine full of thieves."
He also complained that millions of calls are answered by the hotline, but people are not being tested due to lack of testing kit.
"The whole country has been declared risky. The BNP has repeatedly expressed its concern from long ago that this kind of situation would be created," he said.
Mirza Fakhrul demanded that the army should be handed over the responsibility to distribute relief. He also suggested the government should restart the distribution of OMS rice.
Meanwhile, the BNP has already ensured food assistance to five million poor families and it will be with the people with all its power, said BNP secretary-general.
