A good number of innovative maritime technologies and products on sustainable shipping were showcased in the fifth edition of the Bangladesh International Marine and Offshore Expo 2023, which began at the International Convention City Bashundhara (ICCB) in Dhaka on Thursday.
The three-day exhibition, organised by Savor International Limited in collaboration with Fireworks Trade Media Group, Singapore, brings together companies from 15 different countries, presenting cutting-edge solutions in shipbuilding, ship recycling, offshore oil and gas support, shipping, logistics, and port services, as well as fishing vessels and process automation.
Chinese engine manufacturer Weichai showcased its latest innovations, which offer both improved fuel efficiency and reduced carbon emissions while enhancing engine performance.
Suzayet Akbar, the country manager of Weichai, told The Business Standard, "Buyers are now looking for engines that not only provide fuel economy but also deliver long-lasting performance. With the global push towards a sustainable maritime economy, stakeholders are increasingly considering environmental impact in their purchasing decisions."
The Maritime Research Institute Netherlands also took part in the expo, with its project "Ships" dedicated to researching the path towards zero-emission shipping.
Nicole van Spronsen, project manager of the project, shared their efforts in reducing carbon emissions at sea, including piloting the use of wind power and electric engines in short-distance voyages.
She further said that they are exploring hybrid engine systems that combine electric, wind, and traditional oil-powered engines for long-distance voyages.
Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (Wasa) also took part in the expo to display its digitisation initiatives and the utilisation of technology to provide clean and efficient water supply services to the public. Wasa also showed a trend of improvement during the last 15 years which still continues.
The exhibition witnessed a substantial turnout on its second day on Friday, with thousands of visitors exploring the latest innovations and services related to the maritime industry.
