3 more public universities join cluster admission system this year
Committees will be formed to manage the cluster admission test and develop a unified admission test framework, UGC Chairman says
Three more public universities have agreed to join the existing cluster system, bringing the total to 35 for streamlining undergraduate admissions this academic year.
Of the newly-added institutions, Kurigram Agricultural University will now be part of the agricultural cluster, while Sunamganj Science and Technology University and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman University of Science and Technology, Pirojpur, will join the science and technology cluster.
The decision was made unanimously during a discussion meeting at the UGC building on Sunday. Vice-chancellors of the 32 public universities in the cluster system attended the meeting, chaired by UGC Chairman (Additional Charge) Professor Dr Muhammad Alamgir.
Professor Alamgir said, "UGC does not intend to impose decisions on the universities; it is working to maintain their independence."
He further addressed concerns about the proposed cluster admission test, assuring that it would not undermine the unique character of public universities. He said, "The characteristics of public universities will not be undermined if they participate in the cluster admission test."
To ensure transparency and smooth implementation of the cluster admission test, the UGC Chairman suggested the formation of a dedicated committee.
Additionally, Professor Alamgir announced the upcoming formation of a committee to develop a framework for a single admission test for all universities under the National Testing Authority (NTA).
Last year, 32 public universities conducted admission tests in three clusters – one for general and science and technology universities, another for agricultural universities, and the other for engineering universities.
UGC members Professor Md Sajjad Hossain, Professor Md Abu Taher, Professor Hasina Khan, and UGC Secretary Ferdous Zaman were also present at the meeting.
