2 Bangladeshi fishermen shot by Myanmar Navy in Naf River
One seriously injured with bullet wounds in arms, legs
Two Bangladeshi fishermen were injured as the Myanmar Navy allegedly fired upon them in the River Naf in Teknaf of Cox's Bazar on Sunday.
The incident happened around 10:30am at Naikhangdia area while the fishermen were returning to the shore in a trawler, said Abdul Mannan, Sabrang union parishad member for Shah Parir Dwip ward.
The injured fishermen – Mohammad Faruq, 25, son of Mohammad Faruq in Dakshin Para area, and Mohammad Ismail, 20, son of Ali Ahmed in Majher Para area of Shah Parir Dwip in Teknaf – were given first aid at Teknaf upazila health complex.
Ismail sustained slight injuries, while Faruq is seriously injured with three bullet wounds in his arms and legs. He has been moved to Cox's Bazar sadar hospital, said Teknaf health complex medical officer Dr Suraiya Yasmin.
Boatman Yusuf of the fishing trawler, Mohammad Yusuf told The Business Standard that after fishing in the bay adjacent to St Martin's Island, they were returning to the shore of Shah Parir Dwip. Meanwhile, a Myanmar Navy ship was passing them in the area adjacent to Naikhangdia area. Suddenly, the trawler was fired from that ship, leaving the two fishermen injured.
"We were in the Bangladesh territory of the Naf River. We raised our hands and displayed the Bangladeshi flag, signaling them [Myanmar Navy] not to shoot. But they disregarded it," he said.
