High tides bust embankments in Barguna flooding 20 villages
“We are repairing them by filling geo-bags with sand to stop the water from entering the locality,”
At least 20 villages in Barguna have been flooded as high tides breached embankments in four places on Wednesday morning, submerging croplands, houses and fish farms.
Barguna District Water Development Board Executive Engineer Kaiser Ahmed said, "We have received reports of embankments getting damaged in several areas of the district due to high tide in the morning.
"We are repairing them by filling geo-bags with sand to stop the water from entering the locality," he added.
Ramizul Rahman, deputy director of the Barguna district agriculture department, said, "We are working to determine whether there is any damage to fisheries and agriculture due to the embankment breaking."
Barguna Deputy Commissioner Mostain Billah said, "As per our instructions, the broken embankments have already been repaired by the staff of the Water Development Board."
"The tidal pressure and altitude of the waves will be much higher at night. The Water Development Board has been instructed to be ready in this regard," he added.
