Electricity supply disrupted in south-western regions of Bangladesh

Electricity supply has been disrupted in the most areas of the south-western region as cyclone Amphan stroked the coastline.

Most of the areas of Barishal and Khulan division have had no electricity supply since Wednesday noon.

According to power supplying authorities, supply lines have been damaged after trees fell on them. Meanwhile, due to heavy wind the distribution is being affected with irregular trip.

However, the distribution company said that they are in the field with enough preparation to keep the supply uninterrupted.

"We are trying to continue the supply for the safety of the national grid. Therefore, whenever we see a trip or disruption in any line, we promptly respond to restore the line," said Engr Md Shafique Uddin, managing director at West Zone Power Distribution Company Ltd (WZPDCO).

WZPDCO is responsible for supplying electricity in Khulna, Barishal and some parts of Dhaka divison. Though Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board (BREB) also has power service in these area.

Engr Md Shafique Uddin said that his company has took preparation two days ahead to keep the supply uninterrupted.

"Our lineman, electrician and other staffs are in the field with mobile vehicles. And we are monitoring the situation with field level control room and central control room," he added.

The distribution company has around 12 lakh consumers in Barishal, Khulna and Dhaka.

Earlier, State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid directed the concerned distribution companies to ensure continued supply during the cyclone and take boost up program to restore the system in post cyclone period.

Meanwhile, BREB, also directed to its all Palli Biduth Samithy to monitor the situation strongly.
