Road transport, electricity snapped in Satkhira, mango orchards damaged

The ferocious cyclone has totally destroyed parts of his mango orchard in 6-bigha land causing initial damage which accounts for around Tk3 lakh, said Humayun Ahmed Bilash, a resident of Tala upazila of Satkhira.
Besides mango orchards, paddy fields and other crops in most of the upazilas under Shatkhira district - including Keshabpur, Shyamnagar, Tala - were badly damaged.
Road communication has snapped as most of the roads and highways were blocked with flat-lying trees uprooted by the storm.

Moreover, the mobile network service has been hampered in the district due to no electricity since Wednesday afternoon.
Association of Mobile Telecom Operators of Bangladesh (AMTOM) said, "We are working to restore the network system. However, it might take time as the base transceiver stations (BTS) in different areas were damaged."
However, the mobile operators are yet to assess the extent of damages in south-western region of the country.
On the other hand, electricity supply service has also sustained cyclone damage as distribution lines collapsed in Satkhira, Khulan, Patuakhali, Jhalakhathi, Pirojpur and Barguna.
Abu Hasan, chief engineer at West Zone Power Distribution Company, told The Business Standard that some of its 33KV lines in these areas fell on the ground, but the total damage is yet to be assessed.
"We are trying to restore the system as early as we can. We have started supplying electricity in Barishal city and some areas of Khulna," he added.
