Brac allocates Tk3 cr for Amphan-hit households
“We are also arranging safe drinking water for people who are affected,’’
Brac has allocated a budget of Tk3 crore for low-income families in 10 upazilas of three coastal districts affected by Cyclone Amphan.
The budget has been allocated for the help of the affected people to repair their households and water sanitation and hygiene facilities, said a press release on Saturday.
Under the initiative, approximately 6,000 households at Shyamnagar, Asashuni, Kaliganj, and Kalaroaupazilas in Satkhira; Koira, Paikgachha, Dacope, Botiaghata and Dumuria upazilas under Khulna and Sarankhola upazila under Bagerhat will receive Tk5,000 each.
A team from the Brac Humanitarian Programme will select the households and start distributing the money within one to two days after the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr so that the affected people can start repairing their houses and wash facilities.
"People lost their homes and sanitisation and now they are living with their relatives, some of them are sharing a bed with their neighbours," said Sajedul Hasan, director of Humanitarian Programme, Brac and Brac International.
"So Brac has taken the initiative to rebuild houses, toilets for the affected people as early as possible, and we are also arranging safe drinking water for them,'' he added.
Brac has also sent 12,000 masks, 12,000 gloves and 240 sanitisers to Khulna, Bagerhat and Satkhira three days before the cyclone struck the coastline so that people living in these areas could ensure hygiene practice during the ongoing coronavirus outbreak.
