"His body was cut into pieces, and some of the body parts were recovered from Kolkata," said Kolkata police
Kolkata police have recovered the dismembered body of Anwarul Azim Anar, a member of the parliament (MP) for the Jhenaidah-4 constituency, eight days after he went missing in India.
According to Kolkata police, it was a premeditated murder.
"He was murdered and his body was cut into pieces at a flat of Sanjeeva Garden in Kolkata's New Town," said a deputy police commissioner of Kolkata police.
Sources at Kolkata police said the flat belongs to an excise duty official. They said the flat had a biometric lock installed, and it took the police officials a while to get into the flat.
The Special Task Force of India is looking after the case, and officials of the central investigation branch and Barrakpur detective branch are at the crime scene, according to sources.
"Quoting a DIG from India, our police said the body of Azim has been recovered in Kolkata. We are yet to have completely confirmed information about the matter. Our inspector general [IG] is looking into the details. I will inform the media once everything is confirmed," said Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal.
Abdur Rauf, Azim's personal secretary, also said they are yet to receive official information about the MP's death.
"We haven't received any official information about MP's death, but his family are in Dhaka and stuck for visa application, waiting for Indian visa approval," he said.
Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, inspector general of Bangladesh police, said, "We are working with Kolkata police. We are yet to receive specific information about the murder."
When asked if gold smuggling was a possible motive behind the murder, the IGP said, "We are still investigating whether or not any incident of gold smuggling was involved."
As of filing this report, Azim's daughter Mumtarin Ferdous Doreen was going to Sher-e-Bangla police station to file a murder case.
Azim went missing a day after going to India for medical purposes on 12 May, according to his family members.
On 19 May, his daughter Doreen told reporters during a press briefing that she sought the help of the detective branch (DB) of police to track her father's location.
DB police had been working with Indian police to find MP Azim.
According to the DB Chief Harun-or-Rashid, MP Azim entered India through the Darshana-Gede border on 12 May.
He stayed at the house of a man named Gopal there. The next day, he left the house after breakfast.
"He was supposed to return to the house by evening. But he didn't," said Harun.
