Matarbari power plant resumes full operations
Khondaker Mokammel Hossain, member (production) of the Bangladesh Power Development Board, confirmed that both units of the plant are now operational
The 1,200 MW Matarbari coal-fired power plant has resumed full-scale production after overcoming technical difficulties that caused a complete shutdown earlier this month.
The plant, located in Cox's Bazar, ceased operations on August 10, leading to increased load shedding nationwide. However, with the production resumption, the load-shedding situation has reportedly improved.
Khondaker Mokammel Hossain, member (production) of the Bangladesh Power Development Board, confirmed that both units of the plant are now operational.
"The first unit started on 17 August, and the second on 19 August. They are currently producing over 1,000 MW," he said.
Data from the Power Grid Company of Bangladesh shows a significant reduction in load shedding since the plant's restart. As of 20 August, load shedding was down to 81 MW, with demand at 12,300 MW and supply at 12,219 MW.
The Matarbari power plant is fully owned by the government and developed by the Coal Power Generation Company Bangladesh Limited (CPGCBL). While the first unit is now operational, the second unit is still under testing.
