Eggs thrown at ex-justice Manik outside Sylhet court premises
General people outside Sylhet's Judicial Magistrate Court today (24 August) threw eggs at AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik, a former Supreme Court justice.
The incident occurred around 4:00pm when Manik was being taken to the court, witnesses said.
According to witnesses, the crowd also threw shoes at the former justice. Some people also attempted to physically assault him.
The police escorted Manik to the court under heavy security.
After a hearing, Sylhet's Judicial Magistrate-1 Judge Alamgir Hossain ordered police to send the former justice to jail.
Police produced him in court after showing him arrested in section 54 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), said court inspector Jamshed Alam.
The former justice was detained by the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) while he was allegedly trying to cross over to India from the Jakiganj border area in Sylhet yesterday (23 August) night.
He was later handed over to Kanaighat Police Station on Saturday morning.
According to police, a case has been filed against Manik in Dhaka.
Manik was a justice of the Appellate Division. He retired in September 2015. Later, he became a known figure to attend various Television programmes and talk shows.
Meanwhile, a video circulating on social media apparently shows Manik after his arrest, where he is seen offering to pay money and stating that his siblings are ready to cover the costs.
Expressing frustration, Manik said, "I came to India with such difficulty; why would I return to Bangladesh?"
In another video, Manik is shown being restrained by a cloth on his neck, while being asked for his identity. He reveals his full name and his home in Munshiganj.
During questioning, Manik appeared distressed and said he had both British and Bangladeshi passports, along with several bank cards.
"I was fleeing out of fear. Two individuals here promised to smuggle me across the border for Tk15,000. After paying, they took me to the border but then attacked me, stole Tk60-Tk70 lakh and my phone, and left me injured before fleeing," Manik said.
