No more than two terms for leaders in sports federations, says Asif Mahmud

Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan, the Youth and Sports Advisor, announced that no individual will be allowed to hold the same position in any sports organisation for more than two terms.

Following the fall of Sheikh Hasina's government, Asif was appointed as the Youth and Sports Advisor under the interim government. Since taking up his post, he has embarked on a series of reforms. One key reform is to ensure that no one can remain in charge of a federation for more than two terms. The NSC is also preparing general guidelines for these federations to ensure the smooth implementation of this rule.

"No one will be able to stay in the same position for more than two terms in a sports organisation," Asif said. "If necessary, individuals can serve in other roles within the federation, but not in the same post. Many people consider their position in a federation as a source of power, not responsibility. We are working to address this."

This reform is part of the ministry's broader initiative to depoliticise the sports sector. Asif added, "We are focused on depoliticising sports. While an individual may have a political identity, that influence should not extend to the sporting arena."

The meeting invited four representatives from each federation, but many players and officials also attended, leading to some disorder in the auditorium. Asif highlighted this issue during his speech, noting, "Sports teach us discipline, and it's a lesson that applies to our national life as well. There are many current and former players and coaches present here today, yet I see a clear lack of discipline among some of you." 

As the new regulations come into effect, it is clear that the government is determined to reform the structure of sports organisations, ensuring fair opportunities and preventing the misuse of power in federations.
